Housing justice
We have seen a rise in homelessness in recent years in and around Newcastle, and we are committed to doing all we can to support those who find themselves in this situation. We fully recognise that circumstances are often extremely complex for people in this crisis. We work closely with statutory agencies to provide guidance, support and practical advice where we can, and we will do what we can to support those who turn up on our doors. We are actively committed to supporting Newcastle City Council's SWEP (Severe Weather Emergency Protocol) which is in place, and are championing an end to homelessness in the city.
If you see someone who is homeless, the most important thing you can do is to ensure they have a hot drink and food. We never advocate the provision of cash, but if you feel safe doing so, we believe that chatting with the person and asking their name (ie humanising them!) actually makes a massive difference.
We also have members of our congregation who play an active role in the weekly Street Pastors team who look after the vulnerable in town on a Friday and Saturday nights.
